Yuletide recs (part 2)
Dec. 27th, 2018 05:03 pmToday's crop all happen to be relatively long, plotty reads for exchange stories. It was a nice reading day!
"Learning To See A Future", The Blue Sword, Gen, General Audiences
"In Which Cimorene Visits an Ocean", The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, Cimorene/Mendanbar, General Audiences
"After Hamelin", The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Gen, General Audiences (author rating—I wouldn't read parts of this to a kid/it would depend heavily on the kid)
"Learning To See A Future", The Blue Sword, Gen, General Audiences
One of Harry and Corlath's daughters goes to be fostered for a year at the General Mundy, after having Seen a vision of herself as, apparently, a diplomat. This is a really charming story that reads very much like canon, but with a more explicitly postcolonial approach, since our protagonist was raised in Damar.
"In Which Cimorene Visits an Ocean", The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, Cimorene/Mendanbar, General Audiences
A story from Cimorene's life after Mendanbar has been released from the castle. Funny, in character and tone with canon, and with a convincing plot that I don't want to spoil.
"After Hamelin", The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Gen, General Audiences (author rating—I wouldn't read parts of this to a kid/it would depend heavily on the kid)
A multifaceted retelling of the Pied Piper story, based on five different historical records. The story gives/hints at multiple possible theories for what happened to the children of Hamelin, which is a really interesting structure and pulled me into a story I'm usually not very drawn to.
