dcbrierton: Morwen (from the Enchanted Forest Chronicles) with a cat on her shoulder (Default)
I started these posts before author reveals, and I think I'll finish them in that same spirit of author-anonymity, though of course you can now click through and know who wrote what.

Stories are listed in the order that I read them.

"Want What You Wish For", The Good Place, Tahani/Eleanor, Mature

Eleanor's soulmate is a golden retriever. Tahani's is a cat. The Eleanor voice in this story is hilarious—one of my favorite lines is "This is very bad, and Eleanor is like 60% sure it's partially her fault."

"The Creative Type", The Good Place, Gen, Teen and Up Audiences
A story of how Michael came to be Michael, starting with the beginning of the universe and ending with the selection of a human suit. Unlike the majority of TGP fic, this is really focused on how alien Michael and his origins are, and it does a great job portraying the horror and cruelty of the Bad Place without being especially graphic.

"Aversion", The Good Place, Gen, Teen and Up Audiences
A day in the life of Jason Mendoza, during the study in Australia. I really enjoyed Jason's internal monologue here, in particular the way that he responds to others' expectations.

"Five Times Philosophy Class Was Totally Easy", The Good Place, Gen, Teen and Up Audiences
Philosophy and sex jokes! What more could a fan of this show want?

"Life, Death, and Breakfast", The Good Place, Gen, Not Rated (author rating: canon levels of mentioned Florida explosions etc.)
An exploration of Chidi and Jason's friendship in Australia, told through the medium of breakfast. Both characters are spot on, and the OCs and extra details are pitch-perfect for the shpw and for what they show about Chidi and Jason.

"Choose Your Own Torture", The Good Place, Tahani/Eleanor, Teen and Up Audiences
Michael decides to get Eleanor's input on how to torture the residents of neighborhood 12358W. What could go wrong? Eleanor's ability to wrap Michael around her little finger here is perfect.

"the pleasure principle", The Good Place, Tahani/Eleanor, Explicit
Tahani takes Eleanor up on the offer to share her Australian motel room, and things eventually take a very racy turn. I appreciated the time that went into building the relationship, as well as the character voices, especially Eleanor's consistent frustration with how beautiful Tahani is.

"The Bed", The Good Place, Tahani/Chidi/Eleanor, Teen and Up Audiences
Michael tells Chidi, Eleanor, and Tahani that they're all soulmates; he assigns them all to live in the Clown House due to "resource shortages." As the characters note several times, there is only one bed! This trope-y delight is told mostly from Chidi's viewpoint, offering a great window into how he thinks about his anxiety in the Good Place.

"Fair Jennet and Dear Jenny", Donkeyskin/Peau-d'Âne, Princess/Princess, General Audiences

A sweet retelling of Donkeyskin from the point of view of the donkey. It's fairly light for a version of this particular tale—it glosses quickly over the beginning section with the king, then dwells a long time on the wandering princess's acclimatization to her new home.

"Sophomoric", Fangirl, Cath/Levi, Teen and Up Audiences

Another in the "meta" category, this fic has Cath signing up for Yuletide for the first time, in 2012 (a period in which my personal fan activity was largely limited to the Harry Potter Knit and Crochet House Cup, a ravelry group devoted to pretty much what it sounds like).  The author does a nice job mixing epistolary/found objects with narrative sections.

Today's crop all happen to be relatively long, plotty reads for exchange stories. It was a nice reading day!

"Learning To See A Future", The Blue Sword, Gen, General Audiences
One of Harry and Corlath's daughters goes to be fostered for a year at the General Mundy, after having Seen a vision of herself as, apparently, a diplomat. This is a really charming story that reads very much like canon, but with a more explicitly postcolonial approach, since our protagonist was raised in Damar.

"In Which Cimorene Visits an Ocean", The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, Cimorene/Mendanbar, General Audiences
A story from Cimorene's life after Mendanbar has been released from the castle. Funny, in character and tone with canon, and with a convincing plot that I don't want to spoil.

"After Hamelin", The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Gen, General Audiences (author rating—I wouldn't read parts of this to a kid/it would depend heavily on the kid)
A multifaceted retelling of the Pied Piper story, based on five different historical records. The story gives/hints at multiple possible theories for what happened to the children of Hamelin, which is a really interesting structure and pulled me into a story I'm usually not very drawn to.

In reading order...

"An Account of the Nanite Epidemic in Broad Street", 1850s London Cholera Epidemic RPF, Gen, General Audiences

Not just 1850s London Cholera Epidemic RPF, but 1850s London Cholera Epidemic RPF in SPACE with ROBOTS that ALSO HAVE (SPACE) CHOLERA. What more can a person ask? There is general (not at all graphic) discussion of the symptoms of cholera, which some readers may not enjoy.

"Refraction", 17776: What Football Will Look Like in the Future, Gen, Teen and Up Audiences

A fanfic about the 17776 space probes discussing fanfiction. The primary fandom disucssed is, of course, football RPFs, specifically Game 27. That's the one with the crazy field maps.

"A Night of Purest Winter Vintage", Anne of Green Gables, Gilbert/Anne and Diana & Anne, General Audiences
A very sweet wintry skating fic set set during Anne of Avonlea.  I love the way that Anne feels deeply and often messily/non-transparently-to-herself in canon, and this fic captures that perfectly.
